There have been rumours about it for months, but at last, something tangible – as a potential ferry consortium has requested council support for a new community service – giving the local media a way to finally report the story. It’s thought the route’s mainland home would be at the Portsmouth International Ferry Port – where, incidentally, Wightlink’s crossings will disembark next weekend. There will, no doubt, be detractors but I’m a born optimist and would truly love to see a third cross-Solent car ferry provider enter the marketplace to shake things up and offer Islanders more reliable and more affordable options. Let’s make it happen.
